The ICA Environmental Communication Interest Group aims to advance research on the interplay of the environment with any level of communication and in any setting. Research on health, risk, and science communication issues related to the environment are especially germane. The group welcomes work from any perspective (including critical, cultural, ethnic/minority, feminist) employing any research method motivated by sound research questions about environmental communication.
The group seeks to foster a relationship with other scholarly environmental communication associations to forge global ties among academics and practitioners of environmental communication to increase research, education, funding, and publication opportunities.
The Environmental Communication Interest Group is also a vehicle for advancing the Greening of ICA in the areas of scholarship and education. It will help communication scholars improve the environmental performance of their universities, the media industries, and environmental organizations. The group will support members to integrate sustainability issues into their teaching and promote research in this area.
Information
The interest group began with it's initial meeting at ICA 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts with nearly 40 attendees. We maintain a wikispace for collaboration and archiving of group documents at http://ica-ec-ig.wikispaces.com/ and a group web site is http://enviro.icahdq.org/

CONTENT: The purpose of this workshop is to focus on the role of the communication researcher in science and environmental projects. This type of (self)reflection is a much needed, yet on the whole overlooked or at least not sufficiently acknowledged activity among our research community. And this even if the position(s) of communication researchers often are complex and contradictory. Many science-related projects for example suggest that the main problem (for instance regarding implementation of new technologies), is that the public is uninformed and needs education. The role of the communication researcher therefore becomes to tackle the 'deficit'. Such approach can, in turn, be problematic seen from a democratic perspective where everybody’s view is equally valid or at least seen as legitimate. In environmentally related projects, on the other hand, communication researchers are themselves often motivated by a will to change or to improve actual situations (for people and the environment), if not to solve practical problems. Sometimes the work involves initiating communication campaigns to raise awareness about an urgent environmental issue or attempts to influence people’s behaviour, for example. But how to decide what the best way forward is and how do you combine the analytical task with practical work to solve the very same problem? How can the identities of communication scholars as researchers and as advocates be reconciled? What kinds of ethical and value-related questions do different roles raise? And lastly, to what extent can we expect potential transformative impacts from the specific perspectives, research questions and methods we start from in the framing of our research projects?
In this workshop we want to gather communication researchers with different experiences from the field of science and environmental communication and discuss their different role(s) in projects. We hope to create a space for dialogue, (self)reflection and learning among the participants and to offer an opportunity to deepen the understanding of

OIJES publishes high-quality solicited and unsolicited articles, in English, in all areas of the subject pertaining to environmental engineering, atmospheric sciences, environmental economics and policy, soil sciences, aquatic sciences, microbial ecology, geosciences, hydrology, water sciences, environmental microbiology, environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology, environmental and natural resource economics and policy, environmental engineering, geography, offshore engineering, environmental safety, environmental health, Waste and Waste management etc.
All papers published by OIJES are peer-reviewed after which they undergo revision by the author. Upon receipt of the revised article from the author, same undergo final evaluation before publication. OIJES is a rapid response journal with an issue published every month. Our objective is to publish manuscript(s) that meets the requirement for publication within a MONTH of submission. All publish articles are to remain forever in our site. We also give hard (printed) copies upon request.
The following types of papers are considered for publication:
• Original articles in basic and applied research.
• Critical reviews, surveys, opinions, commentaries and essays.
One key request of researchers across the world is open access to research publications. Online International Journal of Environmental Studies is fully committed to providing free access to all articles as soon as they are published (published articles are freely downloaded for use by any researcher across the world). Our large readership base makes it possible for publish articles to be beneficial to the millions of researchers across the world. We ask you to support this initiative by publishing your papers in this journal.
Authors guide and other details are available at the Journals Web page http://www.onlineresearchjournals.org/OIJES/instructions.htm. Prospective authors should send their manuscript(s) to any of the following email: submit.oijes@onlineresearchjours.org or oijes.onlinersearch@gmail.com
