2011 Conference Theme Book - Communication @ the Center
Edited by Steve Jones, U of Illinios at Chicago
This work draws on scholarship that in theoretical and practical terms focuses on the centrality of communication as a scholarly pursuit, as an intellectual enterprise and as a pervasive element of everyday life. The authors of the chapters herein examine the history and present contours of the field, bringing new insight and clarity into the role communication plays in academia and scholarship. They engage in research that foregrounds communication not only teleologically but also ontologically. The chapters in this volume engage social, political, environmental and other issues with theoretical sophistication and methodological innovation. In so doing the authors have focused on critical challenges and issues that communication is ideally positioned to examine, critique and illuminate. The work represented in Communication @ the Center serves as a thought-provoking guide to the past, present and future of the field of communication. Buy Now!

What It Is:
Launched at last year's annual conference in Boston, the virtual conference is an online, highly interactive experience that allows scholars to engage in this year's conference "Communication and Community" regardless of location or attendance at Phoenix. The site features 45 academic papers from all divisions, discussion forums, live streaming of conference sessions, keynote addresses, and professional workshops. The Virtual Conference will open on 14 May and will remain open until 8 June 2012.
Register for the Virtual Conference:
The Virtual Conference is included in every attendee's registration for the Phoenix Conference. Those who are unable to travel to Phoenix are able to register solely for the Virtual Conference by clicking the red link above. The price for ICA members is $25 USD, or $50 USD for non-members.
Featuring:
44 Academic Papers
New this year, each division has selected two papers for the online session. In some cases, division and interest group planners selected the papers because the subject matter lent itself well to online presentation; in others, they are the top papers in the group. These papers will be posted to the Virtual Conference site and available to download for all virtual conference and regular conference participants in addition to their “in-person” presentation at the conference in Phoenix. A forum for discussion follows each paper in which the paper’s respondent, author, and any other interested participants engage in an online discussion through message postings over the duration of the virtual conference.

20 Sessions Streamed Live
For those who are not able to attend in Phoenix, there will be 20 sessions streamed live to the web, including the main highlights of the conference: the opening/closing plenaries—as well as a sampling of other sessions including the new extended sessions. Participants in Phoenix and around the world will be invited to join the chat sessions and converse with colleagues during the live streaming.

Keynote Addresses
"Reporting Global Change: Too Much America"
Hans Henrik Holm, Jean Monnet Professor and Professor in World Politics at the Danish School of Media and Journalism
The coverage of the USA from the outside has in cross-cultural studies highlighted the connection between the coverage of the creation/reinforcement of stereotypes. This keynote will look at the ongoing American election process seen from outside the US and discuss the counter factual notion that too much reporting can be detrimental to an informed democratic debate outside the US.
"The Logic of Connective Action: Digital Media and the Organization of Protest Politics"
Lance Bennett, Ruddick C. Lawrence Professor of Communication and Professor of Political Science at the U of Washington
From the Arab Spring and los indignados in Spain, to Occupy Wall Street (and beyond), large-scale, sustained protests have used digital media in ways that go well beyond sending and receiving messages. Densely layered digital networks built atop face-to-face assemblies have put communication technologies and code at the center of social and political organization. Bennett's keynote address outlines a model of connective action that contrasts with earlier models of collective action based on assumptions about hierarchical brick and mortar organizations and their resources, leadership, and collective action framing. In place of the often-fractious processes of policing, brokering, and bridging collective identity borders, the more inclusive ethos of many digital networks (particularly on the left) invites more easily personalized identity frames such as "the 99%." What are the political capabilities of connective action networks? What sorts of shifts can we detect among networks of more conventional issue organizations that are borrowing the personalized, digitally mediated models of relatively more self-organizing networks? More generally, how do we understand communication as an organizational process?
