2013 Call for Papers, Panels and Research in Progress

The American Journalism Historians Association invites paper entries, panel proposals and abstracts of research in progress on any facet of media history for its 32nd annual convention to be held 26-28 September 2013 in New Orleans. The deadline for submissions is 15 May 2013.

The AJHA views journalism history broadly, embracing print, broadcasting, advertising, public relations and other forms of mass communication which have been inextricably intertwined with the human past. Because the AJHA requires presentation of original material, research papers and panels submitted to the convention should not have been submitted to or accepted by another convention or publication.

Research Papers

Authors may submit only one research paper. Research entries must be no longer than 25 pages of text, double-spaced, in 12-point type, not including notes.
The Chicago Manual of Style is recommended but not required.

The AJHA paper competition is administered electronically. Papers must be submitted in PDF, saved with author identification only in the file names and not in the papers. Each paper must be submitted as an attachment, with a 150-word abstract and contact information included in the text of the email to: ajhapapers@gmail.com.

Authors of accepted papers must register for the convention and attend in order to present their research. Accepted papers are eligible for several awards including:

Authors will be notified whether their papers have been accepted by the end of July. Research Chair Linda Lumsden is coordinating research paper submissions. Contact her at lumsden@email.arizona.edu.

Panels

To propose a panel, please submit:

  • A brief description of the topic.
  • The names and institutions of the moderator and participants (no more than two of whom may be from the same institution).
  • A brief summary of each participant’s presentation.
  • Email and telephone contact info for the moderator.

    • Entries must be no longer than three pages of text, double-spaced, in 12-point type, with one-inch margins. NO individual may participate in more than one panel.
    Panel organizers must make sure panelists have not agreed to serve on multiple panels. Failure to adhere to the guidelines will lead to rejection of the proposal. Panelists may submit a research paper. Preference will be given to those proposals that involve the audience and panelists in meaningful discussion or debate on original topics relevant to journalism history.

    Research in Progress

    For research in progress submissions, send:

  • A blind abstract of your study with identifying information only in the filename but not in the abstract. Include the proposal title in the abstract. The abstract should include a clear purpose statement as well as a brief description of your primary sources. Abstracts must be no longer than two pages of text, double-spaced, in 12-point type, with one-inch margins, not including notes. Primary sources should be described in an additional one-page, double-spaced, page.
  • The AJHA Research in Progress competition is administered electronically. Proposals must be submitted in PDF, saved with author identification only in the file names and not in the text of the proposal.
    Each proposal must be submitted as an attachment, with your name, project title and contact information included in the text of the email to: ajharip@gmail.com.

    If your proposal is accepted, you’ll be asked to bring to the conference 20 copies of a four- to five-page summary of your research.
