FSD Awards Committee Formed
Carolyn Byerly, FSD Immediate Past Chair
In an effort to bring recognition to the work of feminist communication scholars, Cindy Carter has assembled FSD 2004 Awards Committee composed of Gee-Gee Robinson (professor emerita, McGill U, Canada), Yoo Jae Song (Ewha Women's U, Seoul), Sujata Moorti (Old Dominion U, U.S.), Karen Ross (Coventry U, UK), and Lisa McLaughlin (Miami U of Ohio, U.S.). As the immediate past FSD chair, I will chair the committee's work. Our job is to identify nominees for one or more of ICA's annual awards.

The categories include:
- Steve Chaffee Productivity Award
- Best Book Award
- Best Article Award
- Young Scholar Award
- Aubrey Fisher Mentorship Award
- ICA Fellows' Book Award

Please see ICA Newsletter, Nov. 2003, for descriptions of these awards and to obtain a list of previous recipients: www.icahdq.org. I should also mention that each awards category has a separate selection committee. Another note is that committees have often had trouble generating many submissions, and some years no awards have been granted in some categories.

Since the late 1980s, when ICA began establishing and making awards, there have been few women to receive them, and few recipients who take anything but traditional social science approach. The FSD Awards Committee, which will be an annual project of this division, has an opportunity to broaden the selection process by including feminist scholars and more eclectic approaches to research for the various committees' consideration.

All FSD members are strongly encouraged to be an active part of the awards process by familiarizing yourselves with the categories and criteria, and by sending suggestions to any of the members of the 2004 FSD Awards Committee. Thanks much for your help with this
