Historical Note : The FSIG became a division in ICA in 1993, under the leadership of FSIG co-chairs Angharad Valdivia and Lisa Cuklanz. In line with ICA requirements, the FSD bylaws called for a Chair, with voting membership on the ICA Board; a Vice Chair to oversee the annual research paper competition and program; and a Secretary to maintain minutes and records, and to call for nominations. Other positions are filled by the chair's appointment. In 1998, the ICA Board adopted a policy making all divisional chair and vice-chair terms two years in length.

Historical note: The first organizing meeting of feminist scholars who wanted to form an interest group was held at the annual ICA conference, Honolulu, in May 1985, with the encouragement of ICA President Brenda Dervin. The following year, at the ICA conference in Chicago, members of the new FSIG elected co-chairs for one-year terms. An interest group is awarded program slots at a conference. The chair of an interest group attends and participates in ICA Board meetings but does not have a vote. Therefore, by 1990, the members of FSIG had begun to discuss plans to seek divisional status. This was a three-year process that led to the establishment of the Feminist Scholarship Division.
