Giving to the International Communication Association

Ways to Donate

Make a Donation Today

ICA's success depends on the generosity of you and your colleagues in the academic community. All donations can be made to ICA in general, to specific ICA cause or fund or to one of the established division endowment funds.

For United States contributors, ICA is 501(c) (3) tax exempt organization and your contribution is deductible for federal tax purposes to the maximum extent provided by law.

Gifts of Cash

The traditional method of giving is through a cash donation. This donation can be either online with a credit card or through the mail with a credit card or check.

Gifts of Real Estate

A viable alternative to a cash gift is a gift of appreciated property (real estate). With careful planning, charitable gifts of certain types of assets could provide even greater tax benefits to some donors than a gift of equivalent value in cash. Gifts of appreciated property held more than 12 months could provide a double tax benefit.

Gifts of Stock

You can support communication research by making a contribution of long-term appreciated securities. Such gifts often provide special tax savings for United States contributors. In addition to receiving a tax deduction for the gift, the current value of the securities can be deducted regardless of how much they have appreciated, and there is no capital gains tax on the profit.

The easiest way to make a stock contribution to ICA is to transfer stock using the DTC System. To do this, you must write a letter to your custodian/brokerage firm requesting that "X" number of shares be transferred from your account by way of the DTC system. The shares should be transferred to the following account:

  • Smith Barney DTC #: 0418
Account Name: International Communication Association-Long Term
    Account Number: 56J-05366-17-2YE

You may also contact the ICA Executive Director for other options for gifts of stock.

Please make sure to notify ICA of your gift (stock and number of shares) PRIOR to the transfer being made so that we may watch for your contribution.

Gifts of Royalties

You can donate the Royalties from books, films, and other published materials to ICA or one if its specific funds. All you have to do is specify that the publisher send ICA either all or part of royalties realized. Please ask the publisher to specify what account the contribution is for and identify the donor.

Matching Gifts

Many employers have matching gift programs whereby an employee's charitable contribution can be matched with a contribution from the organization. To make such a gift, an employee needs to complete their company's matching gift form and forward it to ICA along with the gift.

Planned Gifts

ICA offers several planned giving opportunities that allow donors to make larger contributions than are often possible through outright gifts. By making a planned gift, a donor can make a commitment for the future and often receive cost-savings, including tax benefits, today.

Planned giving enables some donors to arrange charitable contributions in a manner that maximizes his or her personal objectives while minimizing the after-tax cost. Depending on the choice of the gift asset and the type of arrangement selected, a donor can generally expect to obtain some or all of the following benefits:

  • Fulfillment of philanthropic goals.
  • Income-tax savings through the charitable deduction for the value of the gift.
  • Avoidance of capital-gain tax on contributions of long-term capital-gain property.
  • Income for life for the donor and/or other beneficiaries.
  • The possibility of increased spendable income.
  • Elimination of federal estate tax on the value of the interest in property passing to charity upon the donor's death.
  • Reduced costs and time in estate settlement.

Making a Bequest

There is no better way to leave a legacy than to remember ICA in your estate plans. Making a bequest to the Association is a wonderful way for you to give back to the profession, and because ICA is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization, United States donors' bequest will be exempt from taxes.

Making a bequest is as simple as asking your attorney to include language in your will expressing your wish to do so. Once you have made a bequest and informed ICA in writing that you have done so, we will add you to our list of ICA donors.

The following are possible ways in which you may choose to make a bequest to the Association:

  • Percentage

  • This method provides the most flexibility since the gift fluctuates according to the size of the estate.
  • Fixed Amount

  • The most common way to make a bequest is to leave a fixed amount; however, this option may not necessarily be the best option for you.
  • Residuary

  • This is what is left after all other debts, taxes, expenses and other bequests have been fulfilled.

For your convenience, we have included sample bequest language on our website. However, ICA strongly urges consultation with your attorney when developing or making changes to your will or other estate plans.
