Human Communication Research

Human Communication Research publishes the best empirical research examining communication processes and effects. Major topic areas for the journal include language and social interaction, nonverbal communication, interpersonal communication, organizational communication and new technologies, group communication, mass communication, health communication, intergroup/intercultural communication, and developmental issues in communication, but research examining other areas relevant to the study of communication is welcome.

Successful submissions to the journal will (a) test or develop theory in the field of communication, (b) be methodologically rigorous, (c) be clearly and concisely written, and (d) address the connections between the research and broader concerns within society. Quantitative research should include clear descriptions of measurement reliability and validity, measures of effect size for all significant effects, measures of variability to accompany all measures of central tendency, and power estimates when results are non-significant. Discussion of results should attend to effect size as well as statistical significance. Qualitative work should discuss procedures employed to assure the validity of interpretations (e.g., negative case analysis, member-checking), as well as provide detailed presentations of data that demonstrate the empirical basis for claims. All research should provide descriptions of data collection and analysis procedures that are accurate, lucid, and comprehensive.

Submission of Manuscripts. The title page (page 1) of the manuscript should provide complete contact information (address, telephone, fax and email) and a brief biographical statement for each author (full name and title, and highest earned academic degree including granting institution). Page 2 should present a single-paragraph abstract of no more than 120 words. The remainder of the manuscript (including references, tables, appendices, etc.) should be no longer than 30 double-spaced pages (12-pt. Times, 1" margins) except where the data clearly justify additional space (e.g., reports of multiple studies). Concise writing and incisively developed arguments should be the goal. Tables should be clear and comprehensible independent of the text. Statistical material presented in tables should not also be presented in text. Except where specified otherwise in this call, the format of the manuscript must follow precisely the specifications of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.) in terms of citation style, references, figures, tables, bias in language and all other elements. Manuscripts not conforming to these guidelines will not be sent for peer-review. In addition, manuscripts will not be peer-reviewed if, in the opinion of the editor, they have little or no potential for publication.

Manuscripts should be submitted to the journal electronically at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hcr. Authors should log-in (or create a new account if they do not have one), visit the “author center” and follow instructions for submitting a new manuscript. Two electronic files will be needed to complete submission: (1) A file containing only the title page (page 1) of the document, and (2) a file containing the remainder of the document (page 2 thru the end of the manuscript). This second file must be prepared in such a fashion that the identity of the author(s) is concealed (i.e., this document should not include the title page or any other identifying information).

Submissions to HCR must not have appeared in any other published form and must not be submitted to any other publication while the manuscript is under review with HCR. All work must be original and work with human subjects must have received authorization from the relevant authorities. Upon acceptance of a manuscript for publication, contributors are required to submit high-quality camera-ready artwork for all figures according to standards determined by the editor and publisher. No copies of the manuscript or other submitted materials will be returned to the author. The Journal retains the right to make changes in accepted manuscripts that (in the opinion of the editor) do not substantially alter meaning, as well as for grammatical, stylistic and space considerations.

Communication Yearbook
Communication Yearbook publishes state-of-the-art literature reviews and articles providing comprehensive syntheses of literature.

Communication Yearbook 32
Call for Submissions

Communication Yearbook 32 will feature state-of-the-discipline literature reviews of communication research. In particular, the volume will highlight reviews of research exploring communication concepts that span traditional "division" divides, issues of central importance to the accomplishment of communication in a variety of contexts and for diverse communicators throughout the world. The volume will also feature literature reviews that detail how bodies of research can and should inform and enhance other scholarly areas in the broader communication discipline as well as enlighten various stakeholders as they wrestle with interpersonal, health, organizational, inter/intracultural, international, mediated, technological, political, rhetorical, and/or societal communication
challenges.

Potential contributors may submit a narrative analysis or a meta-analysis; however, they should carefully integrate comprehensive and thoughtful synthesis and critique of core research findings as well as reflections on future directions for this area of scholarship in terms of theory and application. Potential contributors may certainly review relevant literature published in any language, but submissions must be written in English. Submissions must adhere to APA, 5th edition.

Potential contributors must submit extended abstracts (e.g., 10-15
pages) or complete manuscripts (maximum of 70 pages, including all references and tables) by no later than November 15, 2006. Early submissions are highly encouraged. If authors opt to submit an extended abstract, they must include (a) a compelling rationale for the value of the particular literature review for a global community of diverse communication scholars and stakeholders, (b) a persuasive description of (and argument for) the bodies of scholarship that will be reviewed, and (c) a specific outline for the more developed chapter. Notably, the extended abstract does not need to
reference all of the particular articles and/or books that may be reviewed, but it should provide clear explanation of how the literature review will be conducted and how relevant bodies of work will be selected.

Please submit documents electronically via Word attachment to Dr. Christina S. Beck, Editor, Communication Yearbook 32, at
BECK@ohio.edu. All documents must be prepared in advance for blind review, with all identifying aspects removed. Authors must mask references to their own works within the text. The title page
must be submitted as a separate word document, and it should include all contact information (i.e., mailing address, e-mail address, telephone number, and fax number) for all authors as well as a list of keywords for the submission.

For more information about Communication Yearbook 32 or this call for submissions, please contact Dr. Beck at (740) 593-9167 or via e-mail at BECK@ohio.edu. Although electronic submissions are required, other correspondence may be sent, if desired, to:

Communication Theory
Communication Theory publishes research articles, theoretical essays, and reviews on topics of broad theoretical interest from across the range of communication studies. Essays, regardless of topic or methodological approach, must make a significant contribution to communication theory. Data-based papers are appropriate only insofar as they advance new theoretical developments in communication. Communication Theory recognizes that approaches to theory development and explication are diverse. No single approach or set of approaches is privileged.

Manuscript Submission.  Authors should submit their manuscripts through ICA’s electronic submission process at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/comth. The manuscript document should provide complete contact information (address, telephone, FAX, and email) and brief biographical summaries (full name, highest earned academic degree, institution granting that degree, and present academic or professional title) on the title page for each author. Manuscripts must conform to the specifications of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th edition, and authors should verify that the reference list is complete and in appropriate form. Additional guidelines for manuscript preparation may be found in recent issues of the journal.

Communication Theory staff will process manuscripts in a prompt and professional fashion. In order to expedite reviews and ensure quality in the review process, some manuscripts will be forwarded to an associate editor who will serve as the action editor.

Journal of Communication

The Journal of Communication is a general forum for communication scholarship and publishes articles and book reviews examining a broad range of issues in communication theory and research. JoC publishes the best available scholarship on all aspects of communication. All methods of scholarly inquiry into communication are welcome. Manuscripts should be conceptually meaningful, methodologically sound, interesting, clearly written, and thoughtfully argued.

Manuscript Guidelines. Manuscripts must not have been published elsewhere or be currently under consideration for any other publication. Manuscripts are processed by blind review so author identification must be removed from all pages except the title page, which is retained by the editor.

Ordinarily (unless a compelling argument is made), data- or text-based manuscripts must follow specific guidelines depending upon method. Quantitative manuscripts should report reliability estimates for dependent variables, the amount of variance accounted for in significance tests, and power when a result is not significant. When measures of central tendency are reported, appropriate measures of variability should be included. Quantitative content analyses should report inter-coder reliability, preferably using a statistic that controls for agreement by chance. Survey research should describe the population, sampling procedures, and response rate. Qualitative research should articulate the standards employed to assure the quality and verification of the interpretation presented (e.g., member-checking, negative case analysis).

Prepare manuscripts in strict accordance with the 5th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Submissions are rarely longer than 30 pages, including references, appendixes, endnotes, tables, and figures. (Keep endnotes to a minimum). Please also note that standard type size (12-point) and margins are required. Manuscripts that do not follow these requirements or that are otherwise unsuitable for review will be returned to the author(s) without review. Include a cover letter with author(s) address, telephone, email address, and title of the manuscript. Submit four (4) copies of article manuscripts; attach abstract to each copy of the manuscript; do not identify author(s) except on the detachable title page. Also provide an electronic version on disk in Microsoft Word.

Submissions are NOT accepted by email attachment or fax (authors from outside of North America may request exceptions to this rule prior to submission). Manuscripts meriting review will be read anonymously by two or three referees. In most instances, authors can expect decisions on their work within 120 days. Because manuscripts receive expert review, and because the Editorial Board of JoC is international in scope, this time may vary. No manuscripts will be returned to authors. The Journal retains the right to make changes in accepted manuscripts that (in the opinion of the editor) do not substantially alter meaning as well as for grammatical, stylistic and space considerations.

Authors should submit book review manuscripts to:

Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication

The Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication is a web-based journal that publishes scholarship on computer-mediated communication. Broadly interdisciplinary in scope, the JCMC publishes mostly empirical research making use of social science methods, which should be presented according to the accepted standards for each method. Although the field of computer-mediated communication research is still young, successful original research submissions are expected to include comprehensive literature reviews, and to be theoretically grounded and methodologically rigorous, in addition to advancing new knowledge in innovative ways. Reviews, syntheses, and meta-analyses of prior research are also welcome, as are proposals for special issues.

Manuscript Preparation. JCMC publishes only article-length studies; suggested length is 7,500-10,000 words. Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th Ed.). Submissions that make use of the multimedia and hypertextual potential of the Web are encouraged.

Manuscript Submission. Manuscripts should be submitted to the journal electronically at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jcmc.

Documents in Microsoft Word are preferable and should not be in pdf (portable document format). Manuscripts meriting review will be read anonymously by two or three referees. In most instances, authors can expect decisions on their work within 90 days.

Further guidelines for manuscript preparation and submission, along with all current and back issues of the JCMC, can be found on the JCMC website at: http://www.ascusc.org/jcmc/.

Handbooks of Communication Series
The International Communication Association and Lawrence Erlbaum Associates are pleased to announce a new publishing venture, a jointly sponsored series of scholarly handbooks that represent the interests of ICA members and help to further the association’s goals of promoting theory and research in the communication discipline.

These handbooks will serve as benchmark summaries of current communication scholarship and will set the agenda for future theory and research in the communication discipline. The series will include handbooks that consider content areas in communication research, methodological approaches to communication research, and theoretical lenses for scholarship in communication. These handbooks, then, will attempt to cross subdisciplinary boundaries in communication by considering the conceptual, theoretical, and methodological dimensions that underlie communication scholarship across contexts.

Robert T. Craig, professor of communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will serve as the series editor for the handbooks, with responsibility for identifying appropriate projects and volume editors, initiating projects with the volume editors, and coordinating with ICA and LEA. Professor Craig is currently working with scholars across a wide spectrum of the communication discipline to identify possible projects and editors for the series.
This series of Handbooks of Communication continues the successful collaboration between ICA and LEA that currently exists in the publication of the Communication Yearbook series. ICA and LEA hope to publish one to two handbooks per year, beginning in 2007.
