One of the oldest and most historic cities in the United States, Boston is the capital of the state of Massachusetts and - unofficially - of the northeastern region known as New England. It is also a capital of higher education: Greater Boston hosts over 100 colleges and universities, including several of the world's finest. Its reputation as an intellectual stronghold has lent it the nickname "The Athens of America." Boston is an exemplar of New England's famously unpredictable weather, such that a day in May is as likely to be biting and chilly as it is warm and humid, depending on the currents in nearby Boston Harbor. In addition to scholarship, the high concentration of universities gives Boston a powerful cultural identity, brimming with theaters, music venues, and cuisine. It also derives cultural cache from its historical prominence during the Revolutionary Era: Boston juxtaposes a modern city with monuments and mementoes of patriots and landmarks in the struggle for U.S. independence.
"The 2011 conference theme is intended to highlight the centrality of communication scholarship by encouraging panels that identify core components of critical challenges and issues, such as those noted above, and explore the role of communication studies in addressing them," says Larry Gross, ICA President-Elect and 2011 Conference Program Chair. "At the same time, we will focus on the centrality of communication -as a phenomenon and a field of study - to any coherent and convincing intellectual world view."
