The Feminist Scholarship Division (FSD) invites submissions for the 24-28 May 2018 conference in Prague, Czech Republic. Submissions should contribute to the examinations of genders and communication through the lens of feminist theories, methodologies, and practices.

This year, FSD invites research submissions that respond to the conference theme: Voices. The division focuses on issues of gender intersecting with diverse backgrounds and different life stages. A variety of questions can be considered, for instance:

FSD also invites submissions exploring issues important for feminist scholarship, including feminist pedagogy; the social implications of the gendered digital divide; international gender commonalities and differences by race, social class, gender, sexuality, ability, and nationality; women’s and minorities’ alternative media; feminist political economy of the media; feminist cultural studies; and transnational feminist theory and political practice. FSD also encourages submissions that can bring a focus to international trans-feminist work that will inform feminist scholarship in decades to follow. Feminists working in community collaborations are invited to submit work citing productive efforts toward social and economic justice.

Please note that given limited space on the program, FSD limits submission to ONE full paper, work in progress or panel per person (author or co-author).

Submission Formats
FSD accepts three types of proposals: full papers, works in progress and panels.

In the spirit of the 2018 conference, FSD highly encourages panel suggestions that include feminist scholars, journalists and activists from different Latin America, Asia, and Africa, address feminist issues in communication and media connected to marginalized voices in general, and/or advance feminist scholarship beyond the US and Europe.

Proposal Guidelines:

  1.  Remove all self-identifying information (including in meta-data of the file) from submitted full papers and works in progress for blind review; papers with identifying information will be disqualified.
  2. Sessions with participants with a variety in institutional affiliations and from different geographical regions are strongly preferred.
  3. Suggestions for co-sponsored panels with other ICA Divisions are also very welcome.

Accepted papers will be scheduled for interactive poster or paper sessions, panels, and high-density paper sessions. Paper sessions combine at least 4 presentations on a similar topic or issue. An interactive poster session is included in a plenary; requires visual representation of research; and promotes small group or one-on-one discussions. A high-density session includes 8 to 12 presenters who will briefly outline their papers; then small group or one-to-one discussions with the audience will follow these introductions.

Preconference Proposals
FSD seeks suggestions for preconferences that the submitter will organize. Preconferences typically are workshops on a specific issue, topic, or method of about 4 to 6 hours in length. Accepted preconferences will support submitters in conducting the workshop and to recruit participants. Please submit your pre-conference ideas to the FSD Vice Chair Ingrid Bachmann at ibachman@uc.cl for further discussion of your idea by 15 August 2017.

Awards and Travel Funding
Based on ratings received from the reviewers, FSD will award Top Paper awards to highest ranked student and faculty papers and the highest ranked poster.

The Division will also offer a total of 6 student travel grants based on ranking and financial need. To be considered for travel grants, you must fulfill the following conditions:

  1. You must be a student
  2. You must have a paper accepted for presentation in the Feminist Scholarship Division for ICA 2018 in Prague
  3. You must be a current member of the Feminist Scholarship Division.

For more details about the application process e-mail Ingrid Bachmann (ibachman@uc.cl) by 1 March 2018. Award winners will be notified in April 2018.
