The Instructional and Developmental Communication Division’s mission focuses on the importance of creating environments that are conducive for learning via the use of effective behaviors. Because instructional communication occurs in the classroom, but also outside of the classroom in a variety of contexts (e.g., organizational training and development, health behavior education, interpersonal skills training, technology training, crisis preparedness training), the division promotes the study of communication variables, utilizing various methodologies, and theory, from diverse paradigms, in the instructional process (e.g., teacher-student interaction, instructional technology, optimal methods of information dissemination, information literacy). Additionally, the division provides teacher/scholars an opportunity to submit and share their ideas for effective instruction through unique teaching practices/activities. Division members actively research topics ranging from information literacy, classroom participation, power and influence in instructional settings, and technology in education. Our division provides exciting opportunities to collaborate, network, enhance research, be mentored, engage in service on an international level, and improve and rejuvenate everyday teaching practices.

This year, due to the conference theme (Voices) we are especially interested in the social, psychological, pedagogical, and communicative ways in which voice is expressed (or stifled), practices that allow and foster the growth of voice (or practices that constrain), and how voice impacts relationships, decision-making, and shapes the world in which we live. As always, we welcome cross-institutional affiliation and cross-disciplinary collaboration on all submissions.

The Instructional and Developmental Communication Division seeks three types of submissions:

1. Papers (Submit as an individual submission)
Completed papers that deal with instructional, developmental, or both areas of scholarship will be considered. Papers should be a maximum of 10,000 words (including tables and references). Include a title page with NO identifying information. Indicate on the title page if this is a Debut or Student paper. Study proposals and extended abstracts will not be reviewed.

2. Panels (Submit as a Session)
A group of presenters organized around a thematic instructional or developmental communication topic may submit a panel proposal. In this panel proposal, include a) 75 word program description, b) 400 word panel rationale, c) names and affiliations of presenters, d) title and 150 word abstract for each presenter/paper. Panels composed of speakers from only one university will not be considered.

3. Great Ideas for Teaching Students (GIFTS; submit as an Individual Submission)
Scholars may submit teacher and student tested ideas for effectively teaching a wide variety of communication concepts and contexts (e.g., health communication, research methods, theory, gender, organizational communication, PR). Accepted GIFTS will be presented in high-density panels, which will consist of 1-2 minute oral previews of the GIFT and then groups will breakout for discussion with presenters. To submit a GIFT, please include a) title of activity, b) intended course, c) learning goal/objectives, d) description of activity, and e) evaluation of activity. The submission should be a maximum of 1,000 words. **Place “GIFTS” in the title (e.g., GIFTS: Teaching Communication Theory Using Social Media) and indicate on the title page if this is a Debut or Student submission.

NOTE: Only completed proposals that follow ALL submission guidelines will be considered. Papers or GIFTS that are submitted with identifying information will not be reviewed.
