New Journal of International Crisis and Risk Communication Research

The new Journal of International Crisis and Risk Communication Research is the first scholarly journal dedicated to human and mediated communication issues associated with crises, risks, and emergencies around the world. The Journal is supported by an international editorial board comprised of top risk and crisis communication scholars. The journal publishes articles in a print version and open access online, which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or institution.

The Journal invites manuscripts of a philosophical, theoretical, methodological, critical, applied, pedagogical or empirical nature. Work may focus on organizationally based events and risks, such as:

·         product recalls

·         management misconduct

·         toxic spills and accidents

·         politically motivated acts of violence

·         work place violence or similar threats

Work may also focus on community or regionally based events and risks, such as:

·         hurricanes

·         floods

·         wild fires

·         infectious disease outbreaks or similar threats

The Journal is published biannually.

Dear members, welcome to the March edition of the JS Division newsletter. The countdown to ICA Prague has really started – only 67 days left to go! If you have not registered for the conference yet, please keep in mind that the early bird rate ends on April 30.

       This will be my last ICA conference as Chair/Vice-Chair of the Division (as most of you know, Vice-Chairs/Chairs serve a four-year term, two as Vice-Chair and then two as Chair. At the JS Division Business Meeting in Prague (on Sunday, May 27 – don’t miss it!), I will step down and the highly capable Keren Tenenboim-Weinblatt will take over as Chair and the likewise highly capable Seth Lewis will come in as Vice-Chair. Reflecting on the past four years, I seem to only be able to find clichés: it’s been hard but very rewarding work, the Division has seen amazing year-on-year growth, both in terms of quantity and quality, it’s truly been an honor to serve as the division, etc etc. Standard phrases, perhaps, but nevertheless deeply felt. If there is one thing in particular I am proud of during my tenure, it would be the start of and consolidation of our very successful PhD Student Colloquium, a preconference designed to support young scholars and to truly reflect ICAs international nature. I cannot take credit for this (the original idea came from Division founder Thomas Hanitzsch and former Chair Matt Carlson, as I recall) but I am very happy that I have been able to be involved in some capacity and that it has developed “on my watch”, so to speak. I have been very pleased to see senior scholars give generously of their time to provide insightful and constructive feedback to PhD students, and I have likewise been very pleased to see the PhD students take on responsibility for “their” event. Organizing the PhD Colloquium is now the job of the Division’s Graduate Student and Early Career Representative, a position that since its inception has been filled by extraordinarily talented and hard-working people! So as my tenure approaches its end, I would like to send a big THANK YOU to all of those who have been involved in the PhD Student Colloquium over these past years, both as organizers/commentators, and as PhD student participants – you have really helped create what I hope will continue to be a vibrant Divisional tradition!

Just a quick note that we now have a restaurant booked for our Divisional Reception in Prague! The JS Division Reception will take place at Restaurant Kolkova Celnice (web site: http://www.kolkovna.cz/en/kolkovna-celnice-13) at V Celnici 4. As usual, the Reception immediately follows the Business Meeting: the Business Meeting ends at 18.15 and the reception starts at 18.30 (and ends at 22.00), so again as usual, many of us will walk together from the Business Meeting to the Reception. The venue is a 13-minute walk from the main conference hotel, and just across the street from the Old Town Hilton (detailed map will follow). There will be a buffet dinner (and a few beers) so I hope no-one will leave hungry!

Call for Research Proposals from Tow Center for Digital Journalism, Columbia University (Deadline April 10)

The Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia Journalism School provides journalists with the skills and knowledge to lead the future of digital journalism, and serves as a research and development center for the profession as a whole. The Tow Center, with generous funding from the Knight Foundation, is excited to announce our 2018 Call for Proposals for new research projects around journalism tech, innovation, systems and business models. We welcome proposals from both academics as well as practitioners to surface and tackle the most pressing research questions from the current news environment. The research fellowships are primarily off-site, though we regularly convene fellows at Columbia Journalism School in NYC.

Special issue of Digital Journalism: News: Mobiles, Mobilities, and their Meeting Points.

Much research on digital journalism has focused on “online”, and thus has failed to distinguish between platforms and devices. This is surprising since digital journalism and news, once associated with fixed desktop computers, has become entrenched in mobility and closely connected to mobile devices. Trending research topics such as data journalism, social media, audience analytics cannot be treated as if separate from mobile devices and mobility, but should study their role, significance and peculiarities in all these topics. This special issue will address this, publishing a variety of articles on mobiles, mobilities and their meeting points in the salient case of news. New book by Lars Willnat, David H Weaver & C Cleveland Wilhoit: The American Journalist in the Digital Age (Peter Lang, 2018)

More than a decade has passed since the last comprehensive survey of U.S. journalists was carried out in 2002 by scholars at Indiana University—and the news and the journalists who produce it have undergone dramatic changes and challenges. The American Journalist in the Digital Age is based on interviews with a national probability sample of nearly 1,100 U.S. journalists in the fall of 2013 to document the tremendous changes that have occurred in U.S. journalism in the past decade, many of them due to the rise of new communication technologies and social media. This survey of journalists updates the findings from previous studies and asks new questions about the impact of new technologies and social media in the newsroom, and it includes more nontraditional online journalists than the previous studies.

New book by Peter Bro: Models of Journalism – the functions and influencing factors  (Routledge, March 2018)

Models of Journalism investigates the most fundamental questions of how journalists can best serve the public and what factors enable or obstruct them in doing so. The book evaluates previous scholarly attempts at modeling the function and influencing factors of journalism, and proceeds to develop a range of important new models that take contemporary challenges faced by journalists and journalism into account. Among these new models is the “chronology-of-journalism,” which introduces a new set of influencing factors that can affect journalists in the 21st century. These include internal factors (journalistic principles, precedents and practices) and external factors (journalistic production, publication and perception). Another new model, the “journalistic compass,” delineates differences and similarities between some of the most important journalistic roles in the media landscape. For each new model, Peter Bro takes the actions and attitudes of individual journalists as its starting point. Models of Journalism combines practice and theory to outline and assess existing theoretical models alongside original ones. The book will be a useful tool for researchers, lecturers and practitioners who are engaged with the ever-evolving notions of what journalism is and who journalists are.

Journalism & Communication in the Digital Era

The call for papers for the forthcoming international conference entitled “Media, Polis, Agora: Journalism & Communication in the Digital Era” is open and you are invited to submit your abstract by 10 April!

The conference is organized by the Advanced Media Institute, the Open University of Cyprus and the Laboratoire d’ Études et de Recherches Appliquées en Sciences Sociales of the L’ Université Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier, and will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece.


This interdisciplinary conference aims to bring together scholars, professionals and practitioners from diverse fields -- including journalism studies, media and communication studies, political communication, sociology, critical humanities, policy and governance studies, technology studies, and cultural analysis-- to discuss the dynamic and continuous pivotal interplay of politics (polis), journalism and communication (media) and the public sphere (agora). The conference will further discuss the challenges that the advancement in digital journalism, ethics and content creation, mediated public discourse, new media and positions, as well as mediated political, public and civic action bring to those three spheres. We welcome theoretical, methodological and empirical submissions, case studies, and comparative work from all over the world.

Equally important, the conference seeks to build bridges between academia and the world of journalistic, media and political practice. Thus, we welcome Laboratories, Workshops and Seminars to demonstrate innovative projects, discuss ideas and share best-practices regarding the themes of the Conference.

News: Mobiles, Mobilities, and their Meeting Points


Much research on digital journalism has focused on “online”, and thus has failed to distinguish between platforms and devices. This is surprising since digital journalism and news, once associated with fixed desktop computers, has become entrenched in mobility and closely connected to mobile devices. Trending research topics such as data journalism, social media, audience analytics cannot be treated as if separate from mobile devices and mobility, but should study their role, significance and peculiarities in all these topics. This special issue will address this, publishing a variety of articles on mobiles, mobilities and their meeting points in the salient case of news.

The mobile device is a “miniaturized mobility” par excellence, tailored to fit with contemporary patterns of mobility (Elliott & Urry, 2010). Within the broader realm of digital journalism, we find news produced by mobile journalists (MoJos) as well as citizens using their networked smartphone (e.g. Burum & Quinn, 2015; Westlund, 2013), news distributed via mobile networks and platforms (e.g. Villi & Matikainen, 2015), and news consumed by mobile audiences on mobile devices in diverse spaces and times of the day (e.g. Wolf & Schnauber, 2015). Newsrooms have adapted to accommodate new technologies of mobility: smartphones and related technology (smart watches and augmented-reality glasses), and novel forms of newsrooms have sprung up. Practically, what impact has this had on how reporters source newsmakers and stories, how they report on them, and how they construct news packages? What role do mobile devices have in different forms of journalism, and how is news for mobile devices brought alive and consumed in the form of text, audio and video?

Commercially, the move from print to website was long foretold; news’s move onto social media accessed via smartphones was less expected, and has resulted in news organisations struggling to maintain control over the distribution of their content. This has impacted on the advertising revenue model which has supported news production for the past century. Conceptually, too, news has moved from being fixed to fluid, a flow of updateable information rather than a regularly issued product. Changes in production are also affected by changes in how, where and when news is consumed in the niches of life (Struckmann & Karnowski, 2017) as smartphones also change news consumption. A recent U.S. based study suggests people turn to their mobile devices for news snacking (Molyneux, 2017). Are such patterns found also elsewhere in the world, and how does it correspond to number of occasions people turn to their mobile devices for news, and via other platforms and news media? If so, what effect does that have on news journalism’s presumed civic informational role?

This special issue of Digital Journalism invites scholars to explore the intersection of news and mobility as it concerns production and distribution of news the one hand, and consumption on the other. The news/mobility intersection also raises issues for scholars in how to study such a rapidly evolving target. What epistemologies and methods are best suited to understanding specific aspects of this changeable industry? Both well-argued conceptual pieces, and theoretically informed empirical contributions are welcomed using all research methods, and from scholars working in journalism studies, media, mobilities and related areas. As mobile news is a global phenomenon, we encourage submissions from scholars working in all parts of the world. We invite extended abstracts under these two broad areas, but with an emphasis on digital journalism and the news/mobility nexus:

News production and distribution

   Newsroom adaptation to accommodate the new news mobilities.

   Para-journalism and independent practitioners bypassing traditional news channels (including partisan news, misinformation, fake news, and issues of verification).

   Alternative newsroom approaches and shifts to reconfigure to mobile first

   Studies into the business of mobile media services (m-commerce, payments, advertisements) for news media

   Emerging narrative formats of news reporting afforded by mobile technologies.

   Mobile infrastructure’s impact on news production and distribution.

   Personalising the mobile news experience: customized content and/or delivery

   Mobile devices in diverse forms of citizen journalism (and relating to witnessing, emotions, authenticity, live reporting, social media)

News consumption

   Impact of mobile news channels on other forms of news consumption behaviour

   The impact of mobile news on civic engagement and political decision making.

   How smart phones, smart watches and augmented-reality glasses weave news consumption and sharing into everyday life

   New literacy skills required to navigate and interpret mobile news.

   New conceptualisations of news as fluid rather than fixed.

   New affordances of mobile news technologies

   Preferences for mobile news (applications, sites, notifications, social media etc.)

   Mobile news consumption in space and time

   Multi-method analyses of mobile news consumption (e.g. mixing survey, interviews or diaries with passive trace data)

The 2018 International Association for Dialogue Analysis (IADA) conference will be held from September 25-28, 2018 at the Chinese Culture University in Taipei, Taiwan.

We now live in an environment where many of our dialogues and interactions are facilitated, actualized, virtualized, augmented, or completed by and through communication technologies and online platforms. Humans go online not only to interact with other human beings, but also to interact with information and data. In many contexts, we now achieve dialogical communication by integrating technologies and information, using or creatively appropriating various platforms (e.g. Castells, 2007; Dahlberg, 2007; Fuchs & Obrist, 2010, Papacharissi, 2015).

We also come to a gradual realization that environments and technologies, be they digital or analog, biological or mechanical, material or immaterial, serve more than as surroundings or facilitating arrangements, but also as participants in social-making activities when we pay attentions to their agencies. Information and data are never neutral accumulation or mechanical calculation but modern forms of storytelling with specific utterance positions (Papacharissi, 2015). Contradictions and conflicts between technologies and humans can thus be observed and documented throughout modern history from a critical perspective (e.g. Fuchs & Obrist, 2010).

On the other hand, human agencies can also participate in and change the identities of machines/technologies. To achieve higher (artificial) intelligence, uncertainty, as one of the distinctive human traits, can be incorporated into probability models, so that machines can acquire self-learning abilities through interactions, allowing themselves to change and evolve dialogically (Russell, 2014; Russel & Novig, 2014). Different agencies with their different capabilities and structural positions create different ways of relating and dialoguing, which leads to different degrees and scopes of reflexivity and connectedness. By speaking to/through/with/for other things and beings, we also allow ourselves to cross boundaries and (re)establish dialectical continuities, historically and politically.

This conference encourages scholars to study what happens when we expand the interlocutors of dialogue to non-humans (e.g. Butler, 2015; Caronia & Cooren, 2014; Haraway, 1991; Latour, 1987, 2005; Tannen, 2004) and more immaterial forms of agency (Derrida, 1994) to see how our human existence, cultures, and histories are/can be transformed when we relate to these participants. While transformations and changes are inherent in the dia/logos process among speaking subjects (e.g., Bohm, 1996), the heterogeneous interlocutors of our (post-)modern days can provide and reveal greater possibilities, creativities, and realized responsibilities once they are legitimized and included into dialogues.

We welcome papers, proposals, and panels to theoretically and empirically explore these possibilities through, but not limited to, the following subthemes:

 *  Dialogue and technology: dialogue through technologies, technologies through dialogues, how dialogue (can) serve(s) as a mechanism in technologies (e.g., chatbot, AI), social media and mass self-communication;

 *  Dialogue and memories: texts vs. oral culture, identities/histories/bodies vs. documentation;

 *  Dialogue and virtualities: interfaces/interactions between material and immmaterial entities;

 *  Dialogue and visibility: interaction and modes of seeing, performativity, data visualization;

 *  Dialogue as/with/for the others: animals and plants, things, the dead, the unqualified, outside the boundaries;

 *  Dialogue and hauntology: The detailed study of what or who is haunting dialogues.

Deadline extension: April 16th, 2018


We invite abstracts (500 to 700 words) or extended abstracts (1, 000 to 1,500 words), including references. Any citation style is permitted (e.g., MLA, APA, Chicago).

Each abstract should clearly indicate: how the contribution relates to the theme of the conference; the specific phenomenon the contribution focuses on; the theoretical framework, the research method(s), the empirical bases of the study or the empirical illustration of the theoretical point(s).

Each submission should also provide the following information at the end of the abstract:

1) 5-7 keywords of your study; and

2) specify one to two subthemes to which your abstract most fit (dialogue and technology, dialogue and memories, dialogue and virtualities, dialogue and visibility, dialogue as/with/for the others, dialogue and hauntology)

Würzburg Summer School on Reading and Learning in the Digital World (READI) 2018

Timeframe: July 8-13, 2018

In postindustrial societies, the use of written texts for communication, driven by the rapid development of digital information and communication technologies, has grown strongly. Children, adolescents, and adults of all ages are spending more and more time reading texts on the Internet for personal, educational, or professional purposes. These activities not only require good reading skills in the traditional sense, but also present readers with new challenges. Relevant information must be found efficiently, and information must be compared and integrated across various sources or forms of media presentation (e.g., text, images, and videos). Readers must be able to critically evaluate the quality of written information in order to protect themselves against misinformation, rumors, and propaganda. The digital revolution has also fertilized the development of new research methods. These include methods for capturing psychological processes and competencies involved in reading and learning with texts and multimedia. They also include advanced statistical methods for analyzing reading processes and learning outcomes.

The Würzburg Summer School of Reading and Learning in the Digital World (READI) 2018 will offer focused, in depth courses that advance participants' knowledge and skills. It will bring together renowned experts with doctoral students working in the field. It will take place from July 8th to July 13th, 2018; all courses will be taught in English.

New Book on Uncertainty and Close Relationships

Close relationships are an important and desired aspect of the human experience; but as individuals pursue intimacy and connection with others, they will encounter a variety of questions about the nature, status, and future of their relationships. Consequently, uncertainty is an inevitable and unavoidable element of close relationships. It can arise in response to a variety of relational circumstances and can shape the ways that partners think, feel, and act toward one another. This book summarizes the expansive body of theoretical and empirical research regarding the nature of uncertainty, the conditions that promote uncertainty about relational involvement, and the emotional, cognitive, and communicative outcomes of uncertainty for individuals and their relationships. Based on the robust accumulation of data about uncertainty in close relationships, the book also offers recommendations for coping with ambiguous relational circumstances and proposes new directions for conceptualizing and studying uncertainty in close relationships.

New Issue of Secrecy and Society Available

The latest issue of Secrecy and Society addresses how ideology and popular beliefs are constituted through knowledge claims such as "alternative facts," disinformation, disingenuous rhetoric, “populist conspiracy theory,” "post-truth," and propaganda. The inspiration for this special issue is Richard Hofstadter’s paranoid style in politics, which includes ideas on authoritarianism, history as conspiracy, and anti-intellectualism. Articles in this issue of Secrecy and Society explore conspiracy and paranoia in the Twitterverse, “elliptical secrets,” comparative views of secrecy and the paranoid style in politics, “black box secrecy” in education, and the Cold War Psychological Strategy Board. Issue 2 continues with a discussion of the Joint Declaration on Freedom of Expression and “Fake News,” Disinformation, and Propaganda, several book reviews, and an analysis of freedom of information requests submitted to Australian and U.S. government agencies on torture of Australian citizens. We are pleased to announce the publication of our edited collection, which we describe in the book's introduction as:

"Communication in sport, exercise, and physical activity is both frequent and diverse in its nature. Good communication skills are critical for coaches who work to improve athletic performance, for members of sport teams striving to reach their potential, and for parents seeking to promote their child’s physical activity levels. Communication processes also help determine the practitioners, exercise instructors, and physical educators who are able to inspire and motivate those under their guidance (versus those who are not). And, when we participate in sport and exercise, we use verbal and non-verbal communication as we attempt to manage our own and others’ impressions of us. Beyond these interpersonal exchanges, mass communication (e.g., impersonal messaging) efforts are also frequently used by government organizations, health authorities, workplaces, and schools to encourage sport, exercise, and physical activity participation.

How, then, can we learn from theory and research to ensure that these communication efforts – in their many forms – actually achieve their intended outcomes? This question guided our thoughts when devising the concept for this book, as did our aim to provide coverage of the various communication types outlined above. As an editorial team, we count ourselves extremely fortunate, therefore, that we were able to recruit leaders from the fields of persuasion, communication, social psychology, and sport and exercise psychology, to address a range of key topic areas. By providing contemporary theoretical and research coverage, alongside practical recommendations for message design and communication methods, we hope this book will not only stimulate new research developments, but also enable individuals and organizations to communicate their physical activity messages more effectively.”

ICA Kids 2018: Childcare in Prague

ICA is pleased to provide "ICA Kids 2018" free of charge (on a "first come first serve" basis) for parents in need of childcare during conference hours.

To provide this service, ICA has partnered with beebi, a professional babysitting agency for children in Prague. ICA Kids will be available for 10 hours each day, Fridaythrough Monday, from 08:00 to 18:00 for children 6 months to 12 years. As space is at a premium, we highly recommend you sign up early to reserve your child's space in the program.  

Because ICA is providing this service free of charge to conference registrants, advance registration is required this year, no "drop ins" will be accepted.

About beebi from their website

The word beebi comes from Estonian and means small child. It is a clear and accurate expression of our focus. The symbol of our beebi is a baby penguin, whose development is attentively watched by its parents from the time before its egg hatches until it grows up. Love of children, adaptation to the children's world, enthusiasm and joy from communication and work with children are all the things that most accurately characterize our nannies and their relationship to children. We devote a lot of attention to the selection of babysitters. We give priority to hiring babysitters with a medical or pedagogy education who have completed our childcare vetting process and who have experience with babysitting children. We properly train our nannies, and they also regularly complete medical courses teaching the basics of first aid and other professional events focused on the development and care of children.

The Hilton Old Town is approximately a 12-minute walk from the Hilton Prague (the headquarter location). Parents will receive specific room information before conference begins.  Specific room location is not disclosed for security reasons; however it is a large room with natural sunlight and restrooms nearby. 
  • FOOD: Snacks and beverages will be provided; meals need to be supplied by parents each day. 
  • INFANT CARE: Parents, please bring diaper-changing supplies, formula/baby food, and a change of clothes.
  • ACTIVITIES: Will be planned according to ages and number of children registered.  Usually includes drawing and creative items such as color pencils and markers, coloring pictures, Play Doh, molds, painting pictures, production of necklaces and ring decoration, production and painting of plywood models, toys for smaller kids, books, pop-up books, table games, activities and competitions, face painting, child tattoo. 
  • CHECK IN/OUT: A photo ID (ID, passport, driving license) will be required to check-in and check-out children.
  • COST: ICA is providing this amenity free of charge to conference registrants.  Though there is no charge for this service, a credit card is required to secure a reservation and may be charged if a cancellation fee applies (see Cancellations). 
    •  Cancellations on or before 16:00 UTC on 20 April 2018:  No penalty will apply if an email is sent to jrandolph@icahdq.org and received on or before 16:00 UTC on 20 April 2018.

Special Transportation Benefit for ICA Prague Attendees!

I am delighted to announce that attendees of the 68th Annual Conference in Prague will receive reusable public transportation passes for use during the conference. The transfer passes are valid in “P”, “0” and “B” zones (covering extensive areas from the city center to its peripheries, well beyond the Old Town, where the Hilton hotels are situated, and all the sights and monuments – please see the “Transit Scheme” attached). These passes are good for transport on buses, trams, subway trains, ferries and the Petrin hill funicular railway (a popular tourist attraction). They are not valid on the “PID“ railway (suburban commuter trains), nor on the AE - Airport Express bus line (but they are valid on all the other 4 airport bus lines)! These paper transportation tickets are approximately the size of a business card and are valid from 7:00 am of the first day until 7:00 pm of the final day of the conference.

Prague Conference Theme Highlights

With the release of the Prague program, attendees now can start planning their intellectual (and leisure) time at ICA. The lion’s share of the four-day conference comprises sessions crafted by ICA’s 32 Divisions and Interest Groups, but the program also includes a number of highlights that transcend subfields and speak to this year’s conference theme, “Voices.”

Thursday Evening Plenary: Communication and the Evolution of Voice

From dyadic, face-to-face interactions to blogs and Twitter feeds, the expression of voice has long played a central role in our social and political lives. Studies of voice – its normative underpinnings, its manifestations, and its micro- and macro-level effects – illuminate how our lives have been impacted and how our scholarship has evolved. More important, the landscape continues to evolve and compelling questions remain before us.

ICA’s Thursday evening plenary features four experts whose presentations paint an arc of significant theoretical, technological, political and social change vis-à-vis voice. Guobin Yang (U of Pennsylvania) analyzes the transformation of New Left radicalism in the US and China, and shows how a fascination with abstract theoretical concepts can harm practical struggles for social justice. Peter Baumgartner (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty) examines evolving expressions of voice, particularly in Russia and Eastern Europe. Sheila Coronel (Columbia U) focuses on technology and voice, juxtaposing the power of the early web to break the monopoly of information against the current use of social media for disinformation and harassment purposes. Philip Howard (Oxford U) closes by presenting five design principles that allow for building civic engagement and voice into the internet of things.

Monday Noon Plenary: His Master’s Voice

Nearly three-quarters of a century ago, Paul Lazarsfeld’s two-step flow of communication proposed that voting decisions often are made by consulting other individuals, and that many of these others are typically more exposed to the media than those who consulted them. In the 1940s, the tools of empirical research allowed for the study of only two steps. Lazarsfeld’s model has served as a prelude to the empirical study of networks, and to the role of networks in the diffusion of innovation. But implementation of that idea has been thwarted by the obvious contradiction between the design of surveys (whose respondents are few and far apart) and the design of network research (which is based on respondents’ connectedness). Today, it is quite possible for the twain to meet. In this Monday noon plenary, Elihu Katz (U Pennsylvania) discusses the legacy of Paul Lazarsfeld in a discipline where networks and the nature of voice have been transformed.

2018 Call for CAT Award Nominations

The ICA Communication and Technology Division is seeking nominations for the Frederick Williams Prize for Contribution to the Study of Communication and Technology and the Herbert S. Dordick Dissertation Award.

Organizational Communication Division


The ICA Organizational Communication Division is seeking nominations for the Linda L. Putnam Early Career Scholar Award. This award recognizes the contributions of an early career scholar to organizational communication research.

Specifically, this award honors a scholar no more than six years past receipt of the doctoral degree for a body of work that has made a significant contribution to the field of organizational communication and shows promise for continued development. The selection committee judges the contributions and promise of an early career scholar based on the strength of her or his published work, including, but not limited to, its conceptual foundation, argumentative clarity, and rigor; its influence on the field (e.g., as judged by positive citations); the scholar’s productivity at a given career stage; and the promise of existing work serving as a springboard for continuing organizational communication scholarship.

Please submit nominations no later than March 15, 2018 to Bart van den Hooff, Org Comm Division Chair, at b.j.vanden.hooff@vu.nl. This is also where you can address any questions you might have.


The Organizational Communication Division will hold elections for the positions of Division Secretary and Division Student Representative this year. The nominating committee consists of Keri Stephens, Vernon Miller, Chih-Hui Lai, and Millie Harrison. For each position, the committee is planning to bring a slate of two persons who have agreed to run for election to the Division’s business meeting in Prague.

Any division member is free to send nominations for consideration by the nominating committee. To nominate yourself or another active member of the division, please send the following information to keristephens@austin.utexas.edu by April 6, 2018: (1) the nominee’s name and institutional affiliation; (2) an email from the nominee stating that he or she is willing to be considered; and (3) his or her curriculum vitae.

The division secretary role is a 2-year commitment. The Secretary is in charge of 1) maintaining, distributing, and obtaining Division approval of minutes for Division business meetings; 2) administering the annual W. Charles Redding Dissertation Award Program and making the award presentation at the annual meeting of the Association; 3) assisting the Chairperson in administering business meetings; and 4) participating with the chairperson in evaluating the quality of Division programs.

The division student representative is also a 2-year commitment. This representative is in charge of 1) representing students (and to some extent, any early-career scholars) to division leadership, 2) serving as part of the division leadership team (along with secretary, vice-chair, and chair), and 3) assisting with social media activities for the division and on certain nominating committees.

We are looking forward to receiving your nominations for these key positions! We especially encourage candidates with non-North American affiliations. It goes without saying that the nominees need to be ICA members.

Mobile Communication Interest Group

15th annual ICA mobile pre-conference.

For the 15th time, scholars will be meeting for the ICA mobile pre-conference. This has become an annual fixture at ICA where mobile communication scholars meet to discuss research, examine coming trends, and perhaps most importantly to catch up with colleagues.  

Playing off the general ICA theme of “Voices” this year’s theme for the mobile pre-conference is “From Voice to ...?” This theme recognizes that in its early life, mobile communication was ONLY voice. Now, of course, it is a plethora of other communication and mediation forms among a broad set of publics. As such, it is a fitting theme for the gathering.

The pre-conference will include four 90 minute sessions that focus on 1) the voice of the elderly in mobile communication, 2) voices from the margins in the Global South, 3) voicing concerns about the framing of research around the metaphor of addiction, and 4) “Polyvocal” analysis of location-based narratives. The pre-conference will be held at the National Technical Museum near to the main conference site. All are welcome to register for the event. Public Diplomacy Interest Group

The Doctoral and Post-Doctoral ICA Pre-Conference “Emerging Research and Trends in Public Diplomacy and Nation Branding” will take place at Hilton Prague on May 24, 2018, starting with 9:00.

This pre-conference aims to be a forum for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers to present and discuss their ongoing work on public diplomacy and nation branding, as well as to receive feedback and mentoring from established scholars. We received over 30 submissions, covering a variety of topics ranging from digital diplomacy, evaluation & measurement of public diplomacy, theory building in public diplomacy, and countries soft power, to the role of cities, nation branding or non-state public diplomacy. It is for the first time since the establishment of the Public Diplomacy Interest Group in 2016 that ICA takes place in Central Europe. Therefore, ICA18 in Prague is a fantastic opportunity for emerging and established scholars from all over the world to meet and discuss the further development and growth potential of this interdisciplinary field of study. Facilitating debates on current state of the art, theories and methodologies in public diplomacy, as well as transferring knowledge and mentoring are the best ways to ensure its future.

The pre-conference will take place onsite, at Hilton Prague. The participation fee is US $80 for presenters and non-presenters and includes the coffee breaks and the lunch buffet. Visual Communication Studies Division

Congratulations to those whose research was accepted for presentation at the 68th Annual ICA Conference. Visual Communication Studies papers and panel proposals were very competitive this year and we were able to accept only about 46%. The Association received a record number of submissions for the Prague Conference and had a similar acceptance rate.

Many thanks to all of you who reviewed papers and panels for the Division! As a result, we are offering a very exciting program, and I will work hard to promote  all of our panels at the conference. I’ve received emails from several authors whose work was accepted, as well as those whose work was not, thanking reviewers for their rich and comprehensive comments. I strongly encourage those whose work was not accepted to submit again next year for the Conference in Washington, D.C. And remember that, as the CFP notes, full papers stand a better chance of acceptance than extended abstracts.

Those of you planning to travel to Prague and attend the Conference should book your room and air travel ASAP, if you have not already done so.

Finally, keep your eyes open for another announcement of the VCS Prague Preconference. Graduate students, young scholars, please seriously consider attending. It is an invaluable opportunity to receive feedback on  your current research projects from established scholars in the field. In addition to the larger Conference, it is an event that has proven to be a useful occasion for professional networking. I’m asking other, more senior, members to please encourage those who might benefit, to attend.

In October 2017 the 22 chapter report of the International Panel on Social Progress was published online. The IPSP is modelled on the International Panel on Climate Change and has brought together 250 critical social scientists from around the world since summer 2015. Most importantly for ICA readers, this is the first time in such policy settings that media and communications scholars have been invited to the table, joining economists, philosophers, political scientists and sociologists. The report as a whole will be published in book form by Cambridge University Press in 2018. As the joint coordinators of the report’s chapter on Media and Communications, we would like to let you know the background to this exciting initiative and to explain how you might contribute to the ongoing debate on our findings.

At a time when the cracks in the edifice of neoliberal thinking are evident, the concept of social progress remains a key term for introducing alternative perspectives to mainstream policy debates. But where exactly do media and communications fall within these debates, especially at the time of increasingly anxious public debate in the US, UK and elsewhere about ‘fake news’ and the incipient social responsibilities of digital platforms?

Our 37,000 word chapter had a huge task. First, to introduce non-specialists to what is happening in media, communications and information technologies today: how often do we hear people treat as banal or ‘common knowledge’ the difficult questions that our field seeks to address? But that was only the start to our second, and more important task, which was to evaluate on a global scale the possibilities and constraints in media’s contribution to social progress at a time of increasing conflict and uncertainty.

The chapter brings together 17 authors from 6 continents and foregrounds narratives from the Global South, many of them ICA members. Some early audiences have compared our chapter to the 1980 MacBride report for UNESCO. Certainly this is a time of huge challenge for rethinking the structures that underlie the media environment, as well as new hopes comparable to the time in which MacBride was published. But can we find a way forward?

That at least was the goal of our work over the past two and a half years. We were determined throughout to avoid falling into the common trap of telling ‘universalist’ narratives dominated by the perspectives and interests of one part of the planet. We were determined also to avoid assuming that only ‘new media’, and only media produced by the dominant media industries matter. Local communities have a vital role to play in forging a different media environment, as many examples in the report from around the world show.

What specific themes, in brief, did we cover? Developments in digital technologies over the last thirty years have expanded massively human beings’ capacity to communicate and connect. Media infrastructures have acquired great complexity as a result of rapid technological change and the uneven spread of access. So there is no doubt this is a good time to think critically about “connection” and its potential contribution to social progress.

Our chapter first explores some key developments in media infrastructures and communication flows across the world, bringing out salient differences in the local evolution of, and inequalities in media access. We include case studies from China, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Sweden, and South Africa.

Second, we examine how media – as infrastructures of connection – contribute to public knowledge (including through, but not limited to, journalism). More broadly, we discuss how media platforms enable new types of encounter between people on various scales, while also enabling counter-movements for social progress.

Third, drawing on a major contribution from legal theorist Julie Cohen of Georgetown School of Law, we examine the changing governance of media infrastructures, the issues of social justice that such infrastructures raise and the counter-movements to which they give rise. The chapter includes small case studies on Brazil’s Marco Civil and Facebook’s failed and highly contested attempt to introduce Facebook Free Basics into India.

Fourth, and crucially, we consider media as a specific site of struggle for social progress, arguing that measures of social progress themselves need to be expanded to take account of the human needs (such as voice) that media serve.

The result overall, we hope, is to offer some balanced reflections on how media and communications flows and infrastructures both maintain and challenge asymmetries of power.  The implications of media and communications for social progress are certainly complex, but there is no way they can be ignored. Nor can the dangers of the current moment be ignored, even as we continue to look for hope and recognize the many positive struggles for a better media under way today.

So where next? First of all, if we have whetted your appetite to read the full chapter, it is in English here and in Spanish here. Some people are starting to use it as teaching material too: it is written in accessible non-specialist language that assumes no advanced knowledge of media, so do please consider this.

Most important, however, is to start a field-wide debate about the policy questions our chapter raises and, if possible, to take that debate beyond the field and into other academic fields (such as economics, philosophy and political science) and, above all, into the wider public and policy domain.

That means hearing from you with your critiques and additional perspectives on our chapter and the report generally. That discussion has already started in sessions at the ICA in San Diego and also in the IAMCR (2016 and 2017), but there is much further to go. We are open to whatever ideas you have not just on specific issues, but on how best to take the debate forward.

A special issue later this year of the journal Global Media and Communication will bring together debates on the chapter, with commentators from Brazil, India and Canada. Meanwhile, an Arabic translation of the chapter is planned, and possibly more. A small book version of the final draft of our chapter will also be printed for teaching purposes by CARGC at the University of Pennsylvania, with the kind support of Marwan Kraidy, one of the chapter’s authors; a parallel Spanish book version will, thanks to Omar Rincón, be published by FES Comunicación (Friedrich Ebert Foundation).
