Call for NCA 2018 Paper Session

Can You Play That?  Can You Say That?:  Unleashing George Carlin on the Media/Political Stage

I am interested in putting together a panel  for the 2018 NCA convention (Freedom of Expression division), the working title of which is "Can You Play That?  Can You Say That?:  Unleashing George Carlin on the Media/Political Stage."  Given the  theme of this year's convention, this panel would explore the legal, ethical and journalistic import of "airplay" against the backdrop of the 40th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court case  F.C.C. v. Pacifica.  Recent controversy has precipitated many a conversation in newsrooms of all platforms across the country regarding what one reports and how one reports.  Some themes worthy of exploration are:  laws and policies governing different platforms; the relationship between the expression and reporting of ideas; the bowdlerization of ideas; the changing parameters and attitudes towards "indecency" in subsequent SC decisions; the relationship to defamation and libel law.
